Nutritional Advice for a Healthy Urinary System
Simple, evidence-based dietary guidance to help prevent urinary infections and kidney stone formation.
- Drink at least 1.5 to 2 liters of water daily. Good hydration helps reduce the risk of urinary infections and kidney stone formation.
- Increase your intake of vegetables and fruits, as they help make the urine less acidic and may decrease stone formation.
- If you suffer from oxalate stones, limit foods high in oxalate such as: chocolate and cocoa, spinach, beets, rhubarb, asparagus, sesame, tea, nuts (peanuts, walnuts, hazelnuts, almonds), figs, gelatin-based candies, and excessive vitamin C supplements.
- If you suffer from uric acid stones, reduce foods rich in purines to less than 500 mg/day, including: processed meats, organ meats (liver, kidneys), fish (sardines, anchovies, tuna, herring, trout), and seafood.
- Maintain a normal calcium intake of about 1,000–1,200 mg/day, equivalent to approximately 3–4 servings of calcium-rich foods such as: labneh, cheese, yogurt, tahini, sardines, milk, kishk, molokhia, and almonds.
- Reduce salt intake by limiting table salt, processed foods, and fast food.
